ALD Life is a charity to support all sufferers of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN). Carriers of the ALD gene are either affected by ALD or AMN. ALD is a devastating terminal and progressive genetic brain disorder which mainly affects apparently normal and healthy young boys between the ages of 4 and 10. ALD will quickly strip these boys of all voluntary functions and leave them blind, wheelchair bound, unable to speak or swallow and completely dependent in a few short months. Death is usually within a year of diagnosis and most boys will not reach adulthood. Boys lucky enough to escape childhood ALD can become susceptible to AMN which will gradually debilitate healthy adult males of any age and cause minor to major disability. Adult males can also be prey to ALD in the same way as young boys. Females can also develop symptoms of AMN. Sadly, there is no cure for ALD or AMN.
